World inertia and Christmas

I noticed a very interesting thing lately… the world has inertia. It really does what you want of it but … it takes time and effort. The mind is much lighter, no, much more vivid, or, simply, faster. Although, in some ways, mind can be mind-bogglingly slow :) Anyway, I suppose I always knew it somehow but now I am acutely aware of this simple fact: the world is slow and inert.

We are now celebrating Christmas for all except the Orthodox, so my wish to you all happy Christmas-in-December-celebrating-people: let your world be a bit less inert, a little more agile and willing to follow your dreams. Let it take you a bit less effort to shape your future.

Merry Christmas, everyone!… -->

Oh, mate, oh, websites…

Oh, headache… When I was making the website for the company it looked so cool to make a couple of pages in English and then make the same in Russian. Now I am looking at it with horror. After I complete the rewrite of the site in English, and I plan more than two pages this time, I will have to perform the translation into Russian of all that. Oh, why did I need to do this all in the first place? I do not have and I do not plan to have customers in Russia, why on Earth do I keep a site in Russian? But the funny thing is, once you have the site, you just cannot get rid of it, can you? Oh, no, you are going to keep it running, oh, yes… All right, back to typing the websites… Enjoy your evening in front of TV, please, do.… -->

Business life again…

Floods in Pakistan and China

A very interesting watch of the news again. As you probably noticed (if not – good for you!), there are heavy floods in Pakistan and China. Facts are as follows, according to BBC:

  • Around 350 million people are affected in China
  • Around 20 million people are affected in Pakistan
  • Estimated 1500 people were killed in China
  • Estimated 1600 people were killed in Pakistan
  • Some villages in China were totally wiped off the face of the Earth
  • Some people in Pakistan do not have electricity

What do you think BBC is talking about? Of course, it is Pakistan. Why? According to me, your most reliable analyst, the situation is as follows:

  • Things are basically better organized in China with army and rescue involved, judging by the very few reports by BBC, while in Pakistan things are pretty much left up to the local people.
  • Pakistan has a huge debt to IMF, as opposed to China, so the top honchos have some relationship with the “big brothers in the West”. They will also be sufficiently dependent on the West to agree to basically any conditions.
  • China would not accept aid with “strings attached” and would not aid willingly in schemings of the West.

It is therefore easy to propose aid to Pakistan under the cover of a difficult situation (that means “money”). So we have the full coverage of the flood in Pakistan, cries for help and shows of suffering (hey, people did not have internet for 3 days, so they are angry!) over there but there is little, if any, mention of the situation in China.

How much money are we talking about? Oh, well, it is not really that much, only half a billion dollars or thereabout. For the time being, that is. People are greedy. Might be raised to a cool billion shortly, watch the news.… -->

News!

I still think that the best news, unbiased and honest, are provided by The Onion. I think I would actually buy a TV set and even connect it to the aerial (or cable, whatever) if those guys were on air. All the rest of the news companies are actually harmful to the general public compared to The Onion. Really. Trust me on this one.… -->

Hang them all!

The recent article on damn lies by Tim Worstall in The Reg ended with a lament “It’s something of a pity that the upcoming ballot papers will not have a “hang them all” box to tick.”

Now, that got me thinking… You know what? What an excellent idea! This should indeed be an option on the ballot papers. Someone wants to be a public servant? Well, jolly good, you be the servant to the end, including, if public finds it necessary, to the bitter end. Every ballot should have such a line “hang him/her” as an option. If people get dissatisfied, they’ll hang him. If people feel bored, they’ll hang him. Why not? Getting a share of money, and a good share it is, must involve some risk. We are now at the position where being a politician is a totally risk-free job. You just do what you want, get rich and either get out or get on with it. No risk, only gains. Let’s put some risk into the job! Maybe then people will consider carefully their ability to govern the country to the common good…

Haiti – getting worse by the hour

Interesting. Haiti seems to be getting deeper and deeper in trouble, like if on purpose. Now it apparently rains there heavily so that all those victims of the earthquake are ever more miserable.

But the interesting thing is not that. Not that at all. If you never knew where Haiti is located, it may well be useful to have a look. You see, it is an island, and a small island at that. And the right-side half of the island is … the Dominican Republic. Haiti is just the left-side half, the anarchic one, with the capital (climed to be heavily hit) nearly on the border with the Dominican Republic.

How is it that the left side suffers from the earthquake and heavy rains and is getting more and more miserable by the hour while the right side of the same bloody island never even gets mentioned in the news? How is that possible?

Well, call me a conspiracy theory freak but this ain’t right. I reckon that the money collected for Haiti quickly disappears in that anarchic state and ends up in some very particular pockets. While if it was collected for the Dominican Republic, well, it would be used (ok, most of it would) for the purpose it was collected for. My guess is that’s why only Haiti needs help. I may be wrong. I hope I am. But I doubt it.… -->

Road traffic and environment

Today, for a bit of local idiotic thinking, we have the government declare a “Smog Alert”. That means all traffic must slow down, highway in particular to 90 km/h. The intended result is to reduce the amount of hard particles in the air, the “smog”.

Now, the radio gave a fairly good summary of facts about the whole affair today:

  • The smog is caused by particles drifting with the wind from far abroad, not by local pollution.
  • The number of traffic jams was extraordinary, roughly 400 km compared to the usual 100 km.
  • The number of traffic accidents was quite extraordinary as well, although they did not give any numbers to compare.
  • The traffic jams happened in places where usually no traffic jams were ever seen, without any observable cause (no road works, no accidents).

The radio then asked someone at the government about whether all this mayhem was caused by the reduced speed. The answer was roughly “well, the smog usually comes together with bad road conditions, slippery and wet roads and so on, so no wonder there are accidents but it is just a coincidence.

Hmm… Let me just peek outside… Right, +4 C, completely dry, sunshine.

So how the fuck does it help? Well, it does not. The government makes again an appearance of doing something tangible about some problem and the result is usual. They get awards and money. We get traffic jams, accidents, bad humor and pollution. Government is cool, we are all idiots. Welcome to reality.… -->

Arms trade pact

I came across this article in Reuters about the arms trade pact being pushed by US.

What do you think of the last couple of paragraphs? It goes on about US requiring the veto power over the negotiations and any rules that go into the pact:

Washington, they said, had argued that it needed to be able to block an outcome that would permit international standards that are lower than the extremely strict U.S. criteria for international weapons sales.

More permissive standards would put U.S. arms makers at a competitive disadvantage because U.S. firms could be barred from selling to certain foreign governments under U.S. law while their competitors abroad could trade with those same governments under a weak U.N. treaty.

A wonderful example of perverse logic, isn’t it? Well, folks, they do not have any rules now, right? So they are at a competitive disadvantage, right? And you think any kind of rules would be better than none for controlling the arms trade? Eh, not really. Only the rules that will put US at an advantage against the others are good.

Yes, politics is great. You can turn the words any which way and nobody will notice where the truth lies.

US has been making the rules for the world with their “no trade barriers” demagoguery for years. Now they turn from civil goods to the arms trade. Apparently, the weapons industry is big enough that it is ready to go for the empire building too. Or maybe they just woke up with a start and go like “eh? did we miss something?” Yes, guys, go ahead, the world is your fucking playground, sure.

Why am I not surprised that every country in the world is dreaming to have the nuclear weapons arsenal? A wonderful deterrent, and the only known one that works against US empire building ambitions…… -->

Japan claims Kurils

Interesting. The coverage of the conflict between Russia and Japan borders on non-existent. Here is the list of articles through Google (here is the article in China View). Who reports? A couple of low-profile news sites. Not a single mention anywhere in the mainstream news. Why is that?

Japanese parliament claims the Russian territory as Japanese and the news call it “Russian-administered territory”. Funny, that. Shall we call Okinawa Japanese-administered territory in return? I would actually be interested in making one of those “freedom coups” in Okinawa, you know, how long should it stay occupied by Japan already? The whole situation is so artificial and stupid, it is really weird that anyone would believe the claims anyway. But, no, it is convenient for someone to keep Japan away from signing a peace treaty with Russia. Any idea, who wants to keep Japan conveniently at war with Russia? No? Really? Tsk, tsk…… -->
