Disappearing Icons

I'm terribly new to AfterStep and only slightly more experienced using
Linux, so be kind. I'm running the RedHat 5.1 version of AfterStep
1.4.5.3. What's happened is that the AfterStep Icon, the Clock Icon
and the Load Icon are now black boxes for my user account. There's
nothing there. The other thing is that whenever I try to select
something say for instance Netscape. Nothing happens. No apps will
load. To add an additional level of wierdity to the situation: it only
affects user accounts. I can run After Step fine using root. Maybe I
should add that I'm using this as a desktop pc and only have one other
user account. I hope that's enough information, but I'd really
appreciate any help that is offered.
thanks,
Brian Seppanen
