:)) Same story here.  My girlfriend wanted to take a book on vacations 
and so I said I wanted to take a portable (which I don't have either) and she

Did not work.  But there's more to it : when I start it in a console
in background (with &) menubar and scrollbar don't appear and when I
start it without & they show up.  And this happens independent of the
user (root as well as my own user).  In the autoexec file I start it with & 
though...

I do use Debian Linux.  I'm not sure what distr. version it is, but
Linux kernel version is 2.0.29.  Afterstep version is 1.4.5.55.
