There is a difference between the way "startx" (or xinit) and xdm deal
with choosing a window manager.  The standard arrangement for startx usues
a file in your home directory called .xinitrc.  xdm, however, uses a file
called .xsession. 

On Red Hat machines, there is an additional file (IIRC, somewhere in the
/usr hierarchy -- any RedHatters with more details?).  This was discussed
a month or two ago on the list; you can check the archive.  I seem to
recall several people agreeing that a ~/.xsession file would override the
special Red Hat configuration; but, also, that this would eliminate some
of the special Red Hat features.
