You say you untar it?? are you dealing with an RPM or a .tar.gz. If you have
the RPM you don't need to untar it you use RPM to install it. If you have a
tar.gz (unless you're on slakware and using one of their tar.gz packages)
then you have to build the source. It sounds like you tried to use rpm on a
source package rather than the RPM... or am I totally misunderstanding
here??
