asmail problem

I installed AS 1.4.5.3 on a PII running Debian pre-2.0 (hamm). I get a
problem running asmail in wharf as follows:
*wharf asmail - Swallow "asmail" /usr/X11R6/bin/asmail &
asmail does not come up when wharf is restarted, and the AfterStep icon is
blank. However, if I start asmail at this point from a terminal window, it
pops into wharf, which runs as normal, until I terminate the asmail
process, at which point wharf dies as well.
Ideas?
