No, you didn't do anything wrong.  There's a problem in the patch.

Gone.  The 1.4.5.x series allows you to use the system-wide defaults for
everything if you like; that's more efficient, because every user of AS on
the system doesn't need a complete ~/G/L/A directory structure.  You can,
however, copy _any_ of the default dirs/files (they default to
/usr/share/afterstep) to your local ~/G/L/A/ directories, and customize
them there.

Not everything is in exactly the same place from 1.4 to 1.4.5.x, so the
directories can't just be re-used.  For instance, the format of WinList
has changed.
