Well, ahem, initially Classic was just supposed to be a temporary
quick fix, because the memory leaks in 1.0 were really alarming on my
24-bit true-color display, and Guyhelm's versions (1.2, 1.3, etc) were
at the time just too unstable, incompatible, and underdocumented.
(By the way, the leaks may still be in 1.4.x; to see them, start top
and tell it to sort by memory size (use the 'M' command). Then open
and close a large number of windows. It may take a while for the X
server to exhaust its internal free memory, but when it does, watch X
balloon in top's display. Note that the leak appears in the X server,
even though the fault lies with AfterStep.)
At any rate, Afterstep 1.0 did everything I wanted and was already
very stable, so I determined to fix it instead. Now I'm in too deep
to back out: too many fixes applied, too many people now using
Classic.

Thanks for the offer; I gratefully accept. I've uploaded the
following files to ftp.the-site.dyn.ml.org/incoming:
AfterStepClassic-1.1beta2.README
AfterStepClassic-1.1beta2.tar.gz
These files should probably be moved to /pub/Linux/AfterStep/devel/.
Allow me to propose a short blurb to be placed in your web site:
AfterStep Classic
Descended from the original AfterStep 1.0, Classic's mission
is to retain 1.0's well-tested stability while fixing a few
annoying bugs. Only one interesting new feature so far: the
ability to hide the entire Wharf. Completely upward
compatible with 1.0; even uses the same .steprc file for
configuration.
People who have been using 1.0 should see the <link to README>
file for what has changed.
<link to tar.gz> is the source tarball.
When the new files appear in devel, I'll send out a new announcement
to Afterstep's mailing list. I'll also work with Andrew Sullivan to
add a Classic-specific section to the FAQ.

Good idea, Redhat has really big pipes and can take the punishment. :)
Thanks again, David.
