custom animated desktop?

How does one make an animation for the desktop? (Or how does one make a custom
screensaver?) 

I see that they all use xlock -mode... I have always wondered whether one could
introduce new "modes" in xlock or if one is restricted to the ones provided. If
not, then what is the format/proceedure for making a new one, say in Gimp?

Or is there another way/another program that allows me to make my own
animations for a desktop or screensaver in Afterstep?
