kdm, which comes with KDE, is great if you want an xlogin manager.

Seriously, KDE/AfterStep coexistence is cool!
You can change the pixmap on the kdm login box to be anything you want,
a penguin, an AfterStep pixmap etc. The fonts of the login box and the
welcome banner are also customizable.
