ok, I'm no expert at this, but I have battled RH and AS and I won.
Are you still using wmconfig? I wiped that out in my RH installs,
caused lots of weirdness with it in. Also added a symlink to
ln -s /usr/local/bin/afterstep /usr/bin/afterstep
And I'm sure you checked that /usr/local/share/afterstep is in tact,
right? Maybe ln -s /usr/local/share/afterstep /usr/share/afterstep is
needed as well in RH 5.2? I run 5.1

This looks like a redhat problem. RH expects to find AS in
/usr/X11R6/bin where
the old version lived. Nowdays AS should be in /usr/local/bin at least
as a
default. /usr/share/afterstep moved to /usr/local/share/afterstep.
Full paths in RH? ugh!
