Eterm .png backgrounds

I'm running Eterm 0.8.6 under afterstep and I can't get Eterm to use
.png files as backgrounds, can this be done at all? Should I just
convert them to .xpm or .jpg? Or is there another lib that I need
besides imlib? I realize this isn't, strictly speaking, an afterstep
question but I couldn't find any docs on this issue and I've seen Eterm
questions come up on this list before.
