Yeah I had this , you don't have the pager running.

Run the pager either via autoexec or in Wharf and this should sort the
problem.

I have been running AS for about a month now with no real problems (except
learning how to configure--even then that just took some time and study),
but recently my background stopped loading when I run X-windows with
AfterStep as the default wm.  Once in AS I can't load a background either.
I usually just restart in fvwm, load a background there, then restart AS.

Any ideas?
