What I need to do is send the configure script some additional information
for it to find things.  Not sure WHY but ... :-)

For the FreeBSD folk that may be out there (since I haven't updated the
port), here's what I had to do to the FreeBSD port Makefile - obviously
the same thing could be done by hand.  I can make my beta port available
if people are interested.

CONFIGURE_ENV=  CPPFLAGS="-I${LOCALBASE}/include" \
                LIBS=-L${LOCALBASE}/lib

Anyway, maybe this will help someone out there.  Let me know if you want
the beta port - not sure if I'll try to get a beta port committed.  :-)
