Been there, done that.  I changed DESTDIR in IMakefile to 
/usr/applic/packages/afterstep -- and AfterStep tried to install into
/usr/applic/packages/afterstep/usr/local/ and its subdirs :-)
Maybe I just edited the wrong variable :-)

I still need to try to change include/configure.h.
