<sigh> Okay another couple more hours spent trying to wrangle the
Wharf - I don't think the boat will ever dock! I tried the *total*
removal of everything AfterStep related, remade with the install.script -
no go. Tried a wharf binary supplied by Michal Vitecek (thanks :) - no go.
Tried the i386.rpm by Michael K. Neylon (thanks :); it's glibc based
<sigh> - no go. Tried an rpm --rebuild on the src.rpm; damn thing
installed into /tmp/AfterStep-1.5pre6/usr/<X11R6|share|doc>, bad rpm!,
without even making an i386.rpm in the proper place. :-\ So then I moved
all the /tmp/AfterStep... stuff to it's proper locations - won't even
start up AS or even core or tell why the hell it fails!!
As far as I could get was to the WM starting and dropping the
Pager and the app/modules that would be in the Wharf on the desktop. It
appears somewhere along the lines AS isn't even reading the ~G/L/A tree
since it kept complaining about not finding "asmail" in /u/s/a or ~G/L/A
and it only existed in ~G/L/A. I also could never get the pixmaps which
were located in another directory I added to the base#.bpp to be
recognized with my look.file - of course I only modified the
~/G/L/A/base#bpp file.
It appears that this is definately an alpha release, and as much
as I like to test these things out - it is just not ment to be. I'll be
hanging out with 1.4.5.55N(6) for now, as much as I hate to say it; but if
you are one of the lucky ones and held your tongue in the right position,
my script to translate 1.4+ look files to 1.5pre+ format works:
[www.the-site.dyn.ml.org/Linux/AfterStep/ (look.script) OR
 ftp.the-site.dyn.ml.org/pub/Linux/AfterStep/devel/ (look.script)]
