Ok, first question: where did you get the AfterStep RPM and what version
is it? There is a RedHat AfterStep-alike which has caused problems. It's
not AS, & I don't know anything about it. Now, as long as you have the
Real Thing . . .

Should be ok. Looks like you're trying to install version 1.4-1. This
version is slightly out of date; it has a few problems which are (in my
view) reason enough to upgrade. You can get the current source from
ftp.afterstep.org/pub/. You can also find newer RPMs scattered about the
net, although I don't know where (I don't have the RPM package on my box).
Have a look through the list archives over the last little while to find
the latest RPMs.

The problem is likely not with your .xinitrc, but in your locale
configuration. What is likely is that your locale is not configured
correctly for the RPM as you have it installed. Locale is needed for
various language support. I am not familiar enough with this to suggest
solutions for you, except to say that you might try getting the AS source
and compiling it.
