Emmanuel, I had a look in the AfterStep mailing
list archive (http://wormhole.eosys.com/mail-archives/afterstep/)
and found some messages that describe the behaviour
you get but with another distribution - Slackware.
(on a sidenote - Debian rules :-)

The thread dies away without much of a hint as to
a solution of the problem. I think you may want
to mail the people involved and ask if they resolved
the problem...
