Are you sure you've installed it correctly?  Type "which afterstep" and
see what it says.  Let's do an example, from my machine:

osgiliath: {1} which afterstep
/usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep          

Change your .xinitrc to the exact path you get from the which command.
