I had this problem til I stopped using xiterm and went back to using
nxterm - I noticed a performance increase in all areas of AS. I don't know
why this should be the case(I've asked around, and no-one else seemed to
know of a problem with xiterm), it wasn't even as if I had a pixmap in the
xiterms.
Try running nxterm as your terminal and see if the folders speed up.
