Hi Sean,
Welcome to the list :) I was introduced to AS at 1.4.5 and as far as I
know, .steprc is a thing of the past. A good place to start looking for
answers for your questions is the mailing list archive at the AS website.
There, you could do a search by subject and you'll likely find your
answers.
As for your questions, you should have a /usr/share/afterstep dir and
you'll find many of the config files such as wharf, which is used to be
called docks? and as well, autoexec, and etc...have a look at those and
you should have a get a good idea as to how AS is running, since you have
your own .steprc file you've been using. The question about xdm, though,
sorry, I can't help you there.
With Best,
Steve
