configuring title bar?

afterstep is magnificent -- one of the things i like most about linux. it
took a little while to bend it to my will, a little while and printing out
the entire afterstep customization page! and now i'm delighted. but i have
two questions that are probably monstrously elementary to everyone but me,
but they have me flummoxed.

first, how might one change the backgrounds of the title bar in the active
window, the title bar of inactive windows, and the running programs bar at
the top of the screen? can any old .xpm (an icon file, for instance) be
used for this (i'm thinking the dark wood /light wood stuff -- my mother
was apparently frightened by a pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha of enlightenment
before i was born)? where is the change specified?

second, i've fiddled around with backgrounds a little. i imported a
1024x768xgod-knows-how-many-colors .jpg, which was a 48k or so jpg, and
converted it to an .xpm -- and now it was over 2 megs! needless to say,
this is a high price to pay for a pretty picture. i'd be happy with just
the picture centered on a plain black background -- much, much smaller
memory footprint -- but for the life of me i can't figure out how to do
it. the choices seem to be endlessly tiling the thing or nothing.

pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
