I guess You have'nt assigned an icon in ~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/database,
or globally in  /usr/share/afterstep/database.

Style   "*emacs"        Icon Text.xpm

Something like this and emacs will animate into an icon insted of into
nothing.

Of course, Text.xpm must exist in some of the directories
/usr/share/afterstep/base.*bpp
