If you're referring to the title bar, you can do this in a very simple way.
Find out which look file you want to use, and then open it with an editor.
Once inside the look file you'll see where it lists the backgrounds for the
title bar and others (including the elusive background grey pattern that you
speak of). Anything that you want to have a custom xpm, will have to be
changed from "1" to "128". 128 allows you to set the xpm of your choice.
There are five things there that you can change, including the non-active
background pattern. Once edited to your desire, you should restart and then
reselect the look file from the start menu. Your changes should have taken
effect and voila...... new pattern.
