i've had this problem, usually just after i installed a new version, it seems
that the new afterstep doesn't wan't to read the old pixmaps, and will display a
different one then exit (back to shell, or xdm) and when you startx (or login
from xdm) again the pixmap you selected it used.
i checked the configure.h and 'xv' is used instead of 'xli' this might be the
problem (i changed it back to 'xli' an d haven't had this problem since) as 'xv'
does have some problems with recognizing some jpeg's (and maybe other types) but
the problem sounds more like a permissions problem, but not quite, since it's
able to copy the pixmap, but can't display it right away. ( unless it's a timing
problem, perhaps it's trying to display it BEFORE the copy is completed ).
