menu highlights not in generated menus?

hi,

still exploring the new features of 1.4. For some reason, using various
different look types, the items in certain generated menus don't
highlight for me. specifically, this applies to the contents of
Decorations -> Look, -> Feel and -> Background.

has anyone else found this? any ideas?
