Is this the FILE or the directory it can't find?  What does your .xinitrc
have in it?  You need to put either a specific path to where the afterstep
binary is OR put afterstep in /usr/local/bin or /usr/X11R6/bin or
someplace else where your path points to.  

I don't think you should have to muck around w/ permissions.  

That said I'm running the port for FreeBSD and since I did the port I made
sure it put things in the right places.  :-)
