Did you get AS as a binary?  I'm pretty sure the AS binaries are compiled
with libc6 (glibc2).  When you run a libc6 program and you only have libc5
you will get the message "no such file or directory".

Upgrading to libc6 without getting RH 5.0 was a BIG hassle for me so I
would suggest getting the source and compiling AS.  It's pretty straight
forward.
