Colors afterstep

I've asked this question before, but I wonder whether I could have the
same quality gradients in 16bpp as in WindowMaker. In other words is
there some kind of parameter that sets the number of colors reserved for
the windowmanager itself. My gradients on my windows titles seem to only
have 16 colors or so, even when I set them to use 128.
