I had very similar kind off problem during installation of Linux itself
(Slackware). As far as I know there are two possible sources of the
problem. First (this happend to me) is that your mouse might be exposed to
a very strong source of light. Try to separate it from the light and check
if it is the problem. 

Second could be the /etc/XF86Config file. You can change it in three
different ways: first run XF86Setup (very nice interface), second : run
XF86Config (this will generate a whole new /etc/XF86Config file; be
careful with that one), third: manually change the /etc/XF86Config file.
Very helpfull could be the reading of the man for XF86Config.
