real afterstep

I run RH5.0 on a 486 with XF86
It seems that what I once thought to be afterstep turns out to be RH's
hack of FVWM2 
I Actually do have the real afterstep which I compiled and installed
and my .xinitrc has one line in it which isthe full path of afterstep
but everytime I start X, I get the FVWM screen. How do I get the real
afterstep to run as my WM?
