The correct runlevel depends on the distribution you are using. To get RH
systems to start x on boot you change the initdefault to 5.
id:5:initdefault:
look at your /etc/inittab file. It should have comments in it to tell you what
runlevels are set up for what.
Before you do this i would suggest that a) you have another machine handy that
you can telnet into your linux box or b) you know how to use the virtual
terminals (F1-F6 on RH). I have more than once had my xdm setup bomb and leave
x hanging.
Also, check out: http://torment.ntr.net/xdm/
http://jovian.physics.uoguelph.ca/~droz/uni/xdm3d.html
for tips on customizing xdm. One note: DON'T follow step 1 for linuxPPC on the
xdm3d.html page unless you want to disable the virtual terminals and possibly
lock yourself out of your machine if x hangs. You might want to do this after
you get everything working so people can't switch to another console, but not
before.
Also, I must admit that I never got this version of XDM3d with PAM support to
work on my RH5 machine, but I did get Ivan Griffin's XDM3d (sans PAM) to work
and there is a link on this page to that source.
