That is all asmail does. When you read the manual page of asmail, you will
find some configuration settings for starting an application when new mail
arrives, or when you click on the icon (I think).

I have asmail running swallowed by Wharf and use the rotating "e" inside of
the monitor pixmaps to signal that there is new mail. If the "e" is not
moving, old mail is waiting, and an empty monitor means no mail.

You need to edit the file ~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/asmail. If you don't
have that file, copy it from /usr/share/afterstep to the mentioned path and
edit the copied file. Before making any changes, read the manual page as
you probably want to remove some things from the default file.
