finger/xiterms ?

Hi all,
I'm running 1.4.5.3 and everything seems to be working fine EXCEPT I'm
a bit confused about a couple things...
I can be logged on with 10's of xiterms open but if I do a 'w' or 'finger'
it shows no one logged on. For example:

No one logged on.
Start one xterm however and ...

What's the deal? Also, why does this version of AS start up xdm/Xsession?
I don't believe 1.0 did. (note xdm starts up upon boot up for me - I
use xdm to run X rather than startx)
