Actually, I agree. Stuff like rotated text tends to M$-Win use. But,
sooner or later the X-Consortium will implement it into the X
protocoll (think of Chinese, which is written from top to bottom).

If s.b. still intents to do it: I think it can be done with direct
X-protocoll programming. I did once a small hack for the wharf-like
gradient drawing with direct X proto access, it was 30-50% faster then
the original stepgfx routine (sorry, lost the sources 'cause I'm
stupid... didn't had my home path on a different hard disk partition 
and reinstalled my system...).
