versioning and release schedule

I talked with Michal, and got a feel (I hope :) for his opinions on it.                            
He definitely wants the split 1.6/1.7 tree, would prefer 1.7.x but is                              
willing to go with 1.7betaX.

He wants to see bugfixes only as the content of the 1.6 tree.

He would like to see releases of the 1.6 tree every 5-7 patches, and
I talked him into agreeing to a release whenever a critical patch is
added. (critical == fixes a crashing bug or a compilation problem)

ps. I asked fuf if he would like to write this, or should I, and he
    asked me to... so I'm writing it.  He'll get a copy, and will 
    undoubtedly tell us if I misrepresented him. :)
