Well.. Trying not to express my real opinions on the matter... But..

Technically.. One could argue (as such in this instance..) http traffic
should *only* go over www. Sub hosts.. As such, ftp should only go over
ftp., cvs over cvs., mail over mail. Etc etc...

I wont get into what I think of this thought.. But last I recall, this is
essentially the reason.
