Wharf problems and missing xiterm

Howdy folks.
For the last three years I've run AS 1.8.3 via RH 6.2.
Now I've upgraded to RH 9 and installed AS 1.8.11.
Last time I followed the documentation and the Redhat specific documentation and eventually got things to work.
This time I'm encountering a couple strange things that I can't find in the documentation or the archives:
1. When Afterstep loads, the wharf slides up the left right side of the screen but very slowly and haltingly. Is that how it's supposed to work now?
2. The Rxvt button under the Utilities menu is no longer connected and the xiterm command no longer works. The result is that I have no access to a terminal.
I'll appreciate any help you send.
