Non-transparent aterms, sometimes

I'm running AfterStep 1.8.8 and aterm 0.4.0 and, most of the
time, when I create a new aterm window, the background is
transparent like I want.
However, occasionally, the main part of the window gets created
in the default background color (black); the scrollbar,
however, is transparent. Moving the window makes the aterm
window resync to the background and become transparent.
This seems to happen only with XFree86 4.x.
How come the aterm windows come up non-transparent sometimes?
