$ cd
$ grep -n afterstep ./.[xX]*
.xinitrc:16:exec afterstep
Then edit the file (.xinitrc in this case, but that may vary) to
change the `exec afterstep' line to
exec afterstep > ${HOME}/.startx-errors 2>&1
