asmail and network sockets

I have a small possibly nonrelated question. I recently realized that
asmail was openning a network socket dutifully checking for mail then
leaving the socket in a closed state. Not that big of a problem except if
I were to leave my box running for a month with out restarting asmail, all
network sockets would be used up and in a closed state. I am running
Linux 2.2.16 with asmail version .55. My question, is this a asmail
problem or is this a Linux problem? How can I fix this?
