missing kernel headers and such.  if you compiled your kernel, 
take a look at the Kernel HOWTO:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html

if you are using your distribution's supplied kernel, make sure
you install the kernel-source and kernel-headers packages.
and, any other development|library related packages.
