Hello,
Here's a report of upgrading from 1.7.111 -> 1.7.161.

Ok, got AS version 1.7.142, patched up to 1.7.161 (with some problems,
patch exited with "hunk out of order" error? -- it didn't say that when
I did the patches each separately though). Compiled, installed.
So far, so good.
Only problem I ran into was that my background image failed to load.
Not really a problem, but I also ended up having the AS banner in the
middle of my first aterm's background (which is transparent)! It looked
kind of cool at first, but I wanted to get rid of soon enough. :-)
The "known bug" of xv window shifting down at image change has
disappeared (like I expected).
Here's what I have in .xsession-errors:
-------
Detected colordepth : 24. Loading configuration ...AfterStep(non-configurable/0_feel.24bpp:258):unknown function name in function specification [CirculateUp].
.... Done.
accepted module connection
AfterStep:function specification requires "name" in [Nop].

asetroot: loaded root background for desk# 0 (pixmap id is 54525953).
-------
The last line may be due to me manually choosing the background again
from Start/Desktop/Pictures.
So no major problems at all or anything, after using this new version
for about 30 mins now. :-) Anyway, I hope this report is of some use
to someone...
Regards,
Mikko
