problems with asmix and icons in wharf

Hi!
After upgrading to afterstep 1.6.10, I have been getting some strange problems:
- Some of my icons have disappeared in the wharf. At the moment, they are the clock, mixer and cd player.
- At one stage I did have the cd player icon in the wharf, but couldn't get any of the widgets to work, ie. play wouldn't play the cd's, open wouldn't open the cd tray.
-When I try and run the mixer from the command line, I get the following:
Error opening mixer device.

I have a device called mixer in my /dev directory:
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           11 Oct 14 23:14 /dev/mixer -> /dev/mixer1
crw-rw-rw-   1 root     sys       14,  16 May  6  1998 /dev/mixer1

Any ideas on what the problems would be, as I would like to  get all functionality working again.
