I was using a different transparent xpm, which I have attached for your
testing. 

Also, I tested what was going wrong some more, and determined that this
only happens when the following is true.

XMMS is being run *before* the wharf is stopped.
WMXMMS is in the wharf.
XMMS is still running when the wharf is restarted.

Maybe WMXMMS is part of the problem?
