wharf and png's

hello list,

when i use png images in the wharf, they look totally scrambled ... with
great effort i can stil say which button has which image (i mean the
'noise' shown on the buttons is not totally random). i tried reinstalling
libpng but that didnt help .. any ideas?
(btw afterstep 1.7.142, libpng 1.0.3-2)
