Most likely, this is a video card thing.  I have two video cards, a TGUI 
9440 and a #9 GXE64.  XFree86 supports bitblits for the #9, but not the 
TGUI.  The #9 does smooth window shading, the TGUI does not.  Also, the 
Wharf animation is jerky on the TGUI.
