button problems

Greetings,
 I recently ran into an intermittent problem:  The buttons at the top of
all the windows have decided to stop working.  The kill button still
works, but the options, max/min, shade/sticky buttons have stopped
working.  I have put a new mouse in, a Logitech first mouse+ with scroll
button.  I changed everthing in the configs/setup, and no luck.  Any
help?
