If you have a Red Hat 5.x system, then I recommend you delete ~/.xinitrc and create an ~/.Xclients that reads
exec 'usr/local/bin/afterstep' > /dev/console
or similar. ~/.Xclients has the virtue that it is used by xdm as well as startx.
