I just tried building a binary rpm from the 1.6.10-1 source rpm (having 
tweaked it to enable fixed menu items).  I gunzipped, made the change, 
gzipped, went to the SPEC directory and did rpm -bb --clean AfterStep.spec 
and got a message to the effect

Unrecognised tag Epoch on line 11

I'm using RH 5.1, rpm 2.5.5-5.2.  Can anyone say why rpm is choking?
